ON CHINA, DISCRIMINATION, AND DONALD TRUMP

In this article, https://www.nbcnews.com/news/asian-america/federal-agencies-are-doing-little-about-rise-anti-asian-hate-n1184766, the author expresses the view that President Trump is fomenting hate against Asian Americans because he has blamed the Chinese government for the release of COVID 19 into the population around the world. And , the writer avers, he has done too little to protect Asia’s Americans from discrimination.

I think we should start with the most obvious and pretty much undisputed fact, the virus came from China. And a second, not substantially disputed fact: the Chinese government lied about the fact that human to human transmission occurs with this virus. China lied. People died. True facts. Not made up .

The article acknowledges that Trump did not blame either the Chinese people nor Americans of Chinese descent for the virus. he made a statement explicitly laying the blame at the feet of government officials. But the writer argues, Trump really did not do enough. According to the writer there is a danger that a torrent of hate crimes is about to be unleashed on Asian Americans. But the reality is that only a relative handful of incidents have been reported to state and federal agencies.

The article states”Public Integrity analysis also found a gap between what’s been reported through official channels and unofficial ones. While many of the cases reported to nonprofit groups do not constitute hate crimes, advocacy groups and media have reported numerous cases of physical assault and vandalism. And yet, among the largest cities, only one, New York, said it was investigating more than a single hate crime related to COVID-19. Experts say that this may be a symptom of a persistent failure of law enforcement to capture and investigate hate crimes.”

Let’s pause for a moment and consider the underlying implications of the last sentence. Prior sentences establish that many of the expressions of bigotry don’t amount to crime and that other actual crimes are not reported to law enforcement. Rather than seeing the failure of law enforcement to investigate alleged crimes that are never reported as the admirable and expected restraint of law enforcement agencies in a free society in which a free people don’t want the cops examining their every interaction to see if it passes muster, the writer of the article seems to think a society where the police monitor every thought word and action as in the movie, The Minority Report , would be a great improvement.

As for any discrimination that might actually occur, we have in this country at least 50 state and local agencies dedicated to eradicating discrimination. These agencies have the legal authority to prosecute hate crimes and take action against employers who discriminate.

https://www.ivancielaw.com/federal-employment-law/what-kind-of-damages-can-i-get-if-i-win-my-discrimination-case/As it happens, I worked as an attorney for one of those agencies, the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission , for 6 years. I am not a novice when it comes to discrimination law. One important fact, the writer of the article either doesn’t know or fails to acknowledge, is that individuals who believe they have been discriminated against do not have to rely on these agencies to vindicate their rights. they can file private lawsuits . That is not an empty vessel. There are lawyers and law firms that make their living suing employers and others for unlawful discrimination. The damage awards can be in the millions and where the suit is a class action , the settlements and damage awards often are in the millions. See this article:

And while the Writer of this article is up in arms about an imagined slight to Asian Americans, the Center for Public Integrity, the sponsor of this article, is missing in action when One of America’s leading universities, Harvard, actually discriminates against Asian American students because there are just too many of them who get good grades and score high on admissions tests. But guess who was there . President Trump’s justice Department. https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2020/2/27/doj-amicus-brief-admissions/

In conclusion, liberal, thy name is hypocrite.

Why Low Carb

First and foremost, I have followed low carb diets to lose weight.  But along the way I found out that low carb diets are a way to prevent diabetes and to control it if you have it.   Hey.  Good.   This is a picture of my  older sister, me, and my cousin when I was about 8 or 9.  These were the two girls I grew up with.  The other two have died, both diabetes sufferers.  I am sad when I look at the picture but I’m not yet ready to join them.  I wish they had had the benefit of what I had learned about low carb diets and diabetes.
